Good Morning Hearts on Fire Family!
I woke up this morning with a few things on my heart.
First, the solo “thing”. I truly hope that you all heard my heart last night.
Our choir is such a beautiful example of what community looks like. I never want to mess with that. The whole “soloist” thing adds a potential dimension to the choir that in my mind, could damage the love and community that we have built. I’m not willing to risk that. That’s why we nave Cardiac Cafe (-:
There is another thing. In Front a Band Fantasy Camp we discuss the idea of “serving the music”. This means making musical choices that do not “take away” from what the composers intent was. This does not mean we have to copy what they did originally. Yes, this perhaps is subjective and we could argue these points.
What this means for me in our “community choir” context is that we are doing music that is popular, that everyone knows and is most likely very familiar with. I don’t want to mess with that. Yes this means that from time to time I will go outside my “no solo” rule and have myself or someone “serve the music”. In this “SOUL” show we will be doing this in a few places because we want to have the best show possible, and there are a few places that I feel absolutely needs a “soloist”.
One more thought. In our particular “choir context” we have some limitations that make “serving the music” a little more difficult. We are not a group of professional singers. We are a community of people that love to sing. We are a family and like I said, I don’t want to mess with that. So, I try to make choices that serve the music and best suit what I think we can do. You all have proven over and over that you can conquer most musical challenges that I set before you (-:
You are all a bunch of badasses (-:
Which leads me to the other thing I woke up thinking about…
I know that we have A LOT of music to still put together. Please,
DON’T FREAK OUT!
We can do this! I’m thinking of a couple things…
1.Could you all either start a half hour earlier of go a half hour longer?
2.We can have more sectionals.
I promise that with the exception of a few of the songs, these are easy. You know most of them. When I’m learning music I have to listen to it…over and over!!
If you spend 30 minutes a day listening with intention to this music I PROMISE it will seep in!
This year has been exceptionally challenging for me. Between the hours it took to get Abbey Road done (which was AWESOME) and my mom falling and work “stuff,” I have been just slammed. Yes, I have probably fallen short a bit on getting us on track. For this I truly am sorry BUT, I know we can do this. If we all WORK TOGETHER and do our homework and just work a little bit harder this month we can catch back up!!!
Lets do this thing!!!
XOXOX
